Douglas Richard Hofstadter is an American cognitive and computer scientist whose research includes concepts such as the sense of self in relation to the external world, consciousness, analogy-making, strange loops, artificial intelligence, and discovery in mathematics and physics.

Douglas wrote the book Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid (1979). I’ve flipped through parts of the book online and I find many of the ideas very appealing to me. I bought a copy today and plan to finish reading it.
